Enter 2020, I escaped Melbourne just before the curfew engulfed the state of Victoria and everything went into lockdown, I had decided to leave Australia and return to India, Australia was not done with me yet, and all international travel came to a standstill.

I began travelling the east coast starting June 2020 making my way up North to beat the wintery months in the South ( Yes, winter in Australia is during summer months in India, Bizzare!) Having spent a couple of months in Byron Bay a small surf town with all attemts of learning to surf in vain also home to Chris Hemsworth, there was news of Queensland closing its border. I rushed to not miss my chance of continuing my journey up in the tropical north not far from the Great Barrier reef.

Fast forward to one fine afternoon in the kitchen of a youth hostel in Cairns where I didn’t know anyone, backpackers from far corners of Europe, South America, North America and Asia sharing a plate of each others culture, I run into the founder of Australia’s only edutech company that educates Doctors and other medical practitioners on prescribing medical cannabis. (Medical Cannabis is legal in Australia)

Medihuanna offered me a step into the product design sphere, to improve the overall user experience of website to give a more enriching experience to the doctors that attend online live workshops through Medihuanna’s event website. There was quite a bit of work to be done.

The early insights to address:

  1. Understand the business and revenue model
  2. Key stakeholders
  3. Backend data archiving system for Doctors who attend the workshop.
  4. Competitive analysis
  5. UX of copywriting
  6. Affinity mapping to understand and work towards a problem statement.
  7. Explore better branding strategies to improve the UI of the product.

Based on the current website I started doing rough prototypes to test them with some users and internal stakeholders it looked something like this.

Rough prototypes

While working on the design of the current usability, it was also important to understand what the users expect from Medihuanna, hence I used Google forms to design surveys for Doctors who had already attended a workshop on Medihuanna’s platform.

I would also sit with the Managing Director of the company to brainstorm and propel ideas for avenues in which Medihuanna can grow and become.

One such example of the session was when we came up with a Vision statement of what Medihuanna’s core business model shall become:

Design a portal that acts as a bridge that doctors can access to get any academic data needed for using medical cannabis in practice, the sponsors (medicinal cannabis pharmaceuticals) need to subscribe to be able to put information on the portal which makes the portal mutually beneficial for its users.

I am still working with Medihuanna and am happy to discuss the work, product design, marketing strategies, and future course of action on a personal channel.
